The Oku Marabou Jaamah Mosque at Allen Street was established in 1938 in Bathurst (Banjul) to host the Oku Marabout Muslim Community as their centre of worship and other religious functions. The building foundation of the Allen Street Mosque started with wood and clay locally known in colonial days as “Kerintin”, and was rebuilt during three different periods. The financing was done by the entire Oku Marabou Community through inter-communal relations in the country.
In the course of time during the period of Governor McCarthy as the then sitting Governor of both Bathurst and Freetown, some of the Oku Marabout from Freetown, Sierra Leone were sent to Bathurst to work In the Judiciary and the Police Force In order to aeate a strong link and enhance bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
The early generations of the Oku Marabout were known by other tribes for their respect, dignity and strong commitments to the Islamic faith, therefore giving them a seat within the affairs of the Muslim Community of Bathurst.
In 1898, one of the leaders of the Independence drive mosque Imam Momodou Marie Nile together with the community of the Muslim elders of then Bathurst decided to integrate some of the Oku Marabou early settlers into the community of Muslim elders in Bathurst, giving them the respect and privilege to call the Azan (the call to prayers), escorting the Imam Ratib for Jumtfah prayers on Friday and reciting the Takbiratul Tashriq during Eid.
Among the early settlers of the Oku Marabout descendants notable elders like Daddy baron Rashid and Daddy Zubairu Davies wer e the first among the elders to be within the community of Muslim elders in the capital (Bathurst).
The Principle of the Oku Marabout community is based on the foundation of mutual respect for all, helping others (Sadaqa) and moreover not compromising their religious ethics and values.
The transformation of this mosque which took several years to rehabilitate is the result of generous financial and material contributions from dedicated Gambians and others from all works of life. However, mention must be made of the benevolence of Daddy Gibril Ridwan Farsiru Betts (Commonly known as Gibila Betts) for his generous gift of the land to the Jamaat on which the present mosque stands.
On Friday, 29th October, 2021, the Oku Marabout Jamaat Mosque•Masjid Rahman was inaugurated as a Jummah Mosque.
While thankingyou for your benevolence and generous support, the Oku Marabout Jamaat is pleased to have you in attendance on the Launching of the Second Phase of the Project. We pray that Allah grant us all rewards in both worlds.
